Tom Balkos joined RKF, a Newmark company, in December 2018 as Vice Chairman of the company’s Canadian retail leasing operations. Based in Toronto, he is overseeing the firm’s continued expansion as a leader in retail brokerage and strategic advisory services for clients throughout Canada with keen focus on multi-market national and international retail rollouts, leasing and sales of experiential retail projects, bringing transformation to urban markets and existing shopping centres. He is joined in the efforts to grow the company’s platform in the country with colleagues at Newmark Knight Frank.
Tom has more than 30 years of experience developing and executing roll-out and expansion strategies for national and global retailers, including site selection and lease negotiations; positioning, repositioning and leasing of large-scale retail and mixed-use urban and suburban projects; and executing retail land sales. His expertise also extends to hospitality and experiential concept development; department store repositioning; bricks-and-mortar placemaking; and advising on investment properties, office portfolios, workplace strategies and commercial leasing.
Prior to joining RKF, Tom was with CBRE in Toronto, where he led the 40-member National Retail Services Team, which consisted of dedicated retail specialists in each major market across Canada providing a fully integrated platform to service retailers’ needs globally. Tom also played a pivotal role in mobilizing CBRE’s global retail service platform, serving as a director and co-founder of CBRE’s Global Cross Border Retail Team and the single point of contact for many international retailers such as CIBC and Eataly.
Tom earned a Bachelor of Arts in Planning and Development, Administration from the University of Toronto. He is member of International Council of Shopping Centers.
